Meet the Ant

Meet the magnificent Camponotus laevigatus, a remarkable carpenter ant species renowned for its adaptability, sleek, polished appearance, and fascinating arboreal lifestyle. With their deep black coloration accented by subtle metallic hues, these ants are as striking as they are hardy. Queens grow to an impressive size of 16-18mm, while minors measure up to 8mm, and the majors, showcasing their strength, reach up to 14mm. Primarily arboreal, Camponotus laevigatus thrives in trees and elevated environments, displaying exceptional climbing abilities. While they are predominantly nocturnal, often becoming most active under the cover of darkness, they can also be seen foraging during the day, particularly in search of food or when conditions are ideal. Their adaptability, stunning appearance, and unique behaviors make them a standout choice for ant enthusiasts seeking an extraordinary and versatile species.

Key Information

Camponotus laevigatus is a hardy and adaptable carpenter ant species, though it shares the slow growth and winter diapause requirements typical of its genus. Their care can be more demanding due to their exceptional climbing skills and their tendency to quickly diminish the effectiveness of fluon barriers, making secure containment a priority. These ants have a strong preference for nectar, often displaying swollen gasters after feeding, with the nectar’s color sometimes visible through their abdomens. To support their development, they also require a regular supply of insect protein.

Ideal for intermediate to experienced ant keepers, Camponotus laevigatus demands attention to barrier maintenance and overall care. Their majors, equipped with powerful mandibles, can deliver a noticeable bite if mishandled. While they do not sting, they defend themselves by spraying formic acid, which has a mild vinegar-like scent and is harmless unless it contacts an open wound, where it may cause minor irritation. With their glossy black appearance, arboreal nature, and resilient demeanor, this species offers a fascinating and rewarding experience for dedicated enthusiasts. However, they are best suited for those prepared to manage their unique care requirements and provide the necessary diapause to ensure their colony thrives.

Care Requirements

Caring for Camponotus laevigatus involves maintaining a consistent temperature of 80-85°F, with 80°F being optimal, achieved through the use of a heat mat or cable paired with a thermostat. A heat gradient is recommended to let the ants regulate their body temperature naturally. Their diet should consist of insect protein and sweet liquids like nectar or sugar water, both of which are crucial for their growth and well-being.

Providing a nest with a humidity gradient is essential, allowing the ants to select their preferred moisture levels. While they are adaptable to different nest types, their excellent climbing skills require secure enclosures and regular barrier upkeep to prevent escapes. Additionally, a diapause period lasting around three months at a reduced temperature of 50-65°F during winter is necessary for their natural growth cycle. Camponotus laevigatus is ideal for experienced ant keepers who are prepared to meet these care requirements and manage their containment effectively.
