Camponotus modoc, commonly known as the Western Carpenter Ant, is one of the most iconic and sought-after carpenter ant species in North America. Native to the forests and mountainous regions of the western United States and Canada, these ants naturally nest inside rotting logs, stumps, and dead wood. Queens are large and impressive, typically reaching 14–18 mm, while workers range from small minors to massive majors, giving the species a highly polymorphic colony structure. Their deep black coloration, dark reddish legs, and velvety golden hairs covering the gaster make them especially striking in display setups.

This species is known for its calm temperament, large colony sizes, and fascinating nighttime activity. Mature colonies can eventually reach well over 10,000 workers, although they grow at a moderate to slower pace compared to many other commonly kept ants. Camponotus modoc thrives with a warm temperature gradient around 78–84°F alongside a moderately humid nesting area. Like many carpenter ants, they require a winter diapause period of roughly 2–4 months at cooler temperatures between 45–55°F to remain healthy long term.

In captivity, they readily feed on sugars such as honey water and nectar, along with insect proteins including mealworms, roaches, flies, and crickets. Their large majors possess powerful mandibles, yet the species is generally non-aggressive and beginner friendly for keepers willing to be patient with their slower development. With their impressive size, beautiful coloration, and massive mature colonies, Camponotus modoc is considered one of the best carpenter ant species for naturalistic displays and long-term colony growth.

To ensure optimal care for Camponotus modoc, maintain a stable temperature range of 74-85°F, with around 80°F being ideal. A heat cable or heat mat connected to a thermostat works well, and providing a heat gradient allows the colony to choose the temperature zone that best supports brood development and activity. Their diet should include a balanced mix of insect protein and sweet liquids such as nectar or sugar water to support healthy growth. Humidity should also be provided as a gradient, giving the ants access to both drier and more humid areas within the nest. While Camponotus modoc can adapt to a variety of nest setups, secure containment is extremely important because they are strong climbers and can escape if barriers are not maintained. This species also benefits from a winter diapause period, with temperatures lowered to around 50-65°F for approximately three months to replicate their natural seasonal cycle. With proper heating, feeding, humidity control, and seasonal care, Camponotus modoc can be a rewarding species for dedicated keepers.
