Ant Species Overview

Meet Myrmecocystus pyramicus, an extraordinary honeypot ant making its first appearance in the ant-keeping hobby. Closely related to Myrmecocystus ewarti, its sister species, M. pyramicus stands out with its unique behavior and captivating presence. Unlike many other honeypot ants, this species is known for its cool trailing behavior, where workers form noticeable foraging trails as they move between the nest and food sources. This makes them especially exciting to observe, as their activity feels more organized and dynamic than what is typically seen in many honeypot species. With their rarity, fascinating behavior, and close relationship to M. ewarti, Myrmecocystus pyramicus represents a truly special addition to the hobby and an exciting new species for keepers to experience.

Key Information About Pyramid Honeypot Ant - Myrmecocystus pyramicus

Myrmecocystus pyramicus is an exceptionally rare honeypot ant species and one of the newest additions to the ant-keeping hobby. As the sister species of Myrmecocystus ewarti, they share a similar appeal while still standing out through their own unique behavior. One of the most fascinating traits of M. pyramicus is their noticeable trailing behavior, which is not commonly seen in the same way among many other honeypot ants. This makes their foraging activity especially interesting to watch as workers move in more organized paths between the nest and food sources. Like all honeypot ants, Myrmecocystus pyramicus requires a nest with proper vertical ceiling space so repletes can hang and develop correctly. Their colonies rely heavily on these repletes for storing liquid food, making nest design an important part of their long-term success. Instead of stinging, they defend themselves by spraying formic acid, which is not dangerous to humans unless it gets into a cut, where it may cause a mild burning sensation. Despite their rarity and exciting behavior, this species should not be considered beginner-friendly. They require intermediate to advanced care due to their sensitivity, specific environmental needs, and the fragile nature of young founding colonies.

Care Requirements

Taking care of Myrmecocystus pyramicus requires careful attention to their specific environmental needs, especially because this species is appearing in the ant-keeping hobby for the first time. As the sister species of Myrmecocystus ewarti, they are an especially exciting honeypot ant to work with, but they should still be treated as an intermediate to advanced species due to their sensitivity during founding and early colony growth.

Like all honeypot ants, Myrmecocystus pyramicus needs a nest with enough vertical ceiling space for proper replete formation. These repletes are essential for storing liquid food and supporting the colony over time. A stable temperature range of 80-85°F, with around 80°F being ideal, should be maintained using a heat cable or heat mat connected to a thermostat. A heat gradient is important so the ants can choose the temperature zone they prefer for brood development and colony activity.

Humidity should also be offered as a gradient, allowing the colony to move between drier and more humid areas as needed. Their diet should include a steady supply of sugary liquids such as nectar or sugar water, along with insect protein to support larvae and colony growth. Sand or a suitable substrate should be provided to help with cocoon construction.

One of the most fascinating parts of keeping Myrmecocystus pyramicus is their unique trailing behavior, which is not commonly seen in the same way among many other honeypots. Watching workers form organized foraging paths makes this species especially rewarding and visually interesting. However, because they are delicate and newly introduced to the hobby, they are best suited for dedicated keepers who can maintain stable conditions and monitor them closely.
